Kannada Kulapurohita Shri Alura Venkata Rao, in his seminal book "Karnataka Gatavaibhava" has the following to say about Adi Pampa's original piece of exquisite poetry:

The Kadambas are the oldest (known) dynasty of Karnataka. Their capital was Banavasi. The Kadamba country used to be known as the Banavasi country too. Adi Pampa, a celebrated poet of the Kannada language, has described the country of Banavasi thus:

Tenkanagaali sonkidodamolnudigeydodamimpanaalva ge

yam kivivokkadam birida malligegandodamaada kendalam

pam kelagondodam madhumahotsavamaadodamenanembenaa

rankusavittodam nenevudenna manam banavasi deshamam ||

"Be it the South Wind which touches my body or a beautiful verse which my ear hears, be it melodious singing which falls on my ears, be it jasmine flowers which I chance to look upon or the joy of uniting with my lover in which I am, be it the most ecstatic happiness which I am experiencing, my mind craves for the land of Banavasi be who it may who hinders."

From this very line of thought the name "Banavasi Balaga" was born in about 2004.

© Banavasi Balaga |

2008 |
